I have a question for you...
Are you secretly delighted when you find something for yourself that nobody else will have?
If you are, well that's great! You're in the right place.
Our story began in 2012. I had decided to follow my own star. I wanted to create the furniture and decor the I particularly loved but could never find.
So off I went and started honing those long forgotten, 20 year old design skills, mixed in the freshly acquired Interior Design Diploma, and took my ever patient fella by the hand, sat him down and explained that I would need his engineering expertise (he's my hero that one :)
By the middle of the year we had taken the first steps into developing An Inside Story's brand.
For the last couple of years we have spent many weekends hanging our shingle at local markets. It's been a great way to meet a really diverse audience, showcase our ideas and designs and to implement some of the feedback we received.
It also enabled us to take on commissions for anything from t.v consoles, dining tables and bathroom counters to custom ottomans and pillow revivals.
This year (2017) we decided to take the next step and open our online store. We wanted to pare down our collection and concentrate on all things handcrafted, re-purposed and vintage.
I had started collecting new and vintage handmade textiles some years ago mainly because of the traditions and stories behind them. I love that those clever artisans have passed their skill on to the next generation so that they can produce those beautiful handmade textiles today.
In 2018/19 we will be introducing a Made to Order collection which will be designed by us and made right here in Nelson. We like local, so our timber suppliers and woodworkers are all in the Nelson/Tasman region.
There are a couple of guidelines that make up the structure of An Inside Story.
Our furniture range will always be handcrafted. From steel, wood and bronze benches and tables to upholstered ottomans. It's what we do best.
We want to incorporate re-purposed elements when and if they are available. If it's got character it's got a place in the workshop.
We celebrate the Modern Vintage style with our collection of vintage and new textiles and carpets, and for all our other lovely pillows and blankets we prefer to use natural fabrics. Linen, hemp, cotton, silk... they're just better.
Our aim is to keep you secretly delighted. We want to continue evolving and changing so there will always be something new and exciting around the corner.
We would love to hear from you. If you would like something made just for you - let us know.
